IBD4Health explores the challenges posed by Big Data in relation to Systems Medicine, surveying state-of-the-art topics in Big Data, including data collection (web smartphones, sensors), data storage and processing (scalable relational databases, Hadoop, etc.), extracting structured from unstructured data, systems issues (security, multicore), analytics (fast algorithms, machine learning), visualization, and a range of applications.

Through its Obesity Case Study, IBD4Health will give participants an insight into the principal sources of data and current developments in data analysis, with a focus on technologies for analysing genome-wide screens for human genes affecting obesity.

Held over ten days, BigData4Health comprises:

  • Six work-packages delivering a series of ex-cathedra lectures and practical exercises, with assessments to reinforce key learning concepts;

  • Case study on Obesity; the case study is a central component of the school, and includes projects undertaken by small groups of students on previously constructed problems using different types of datasets, under the supervision of a tutor (problem-based learning).

  • Discussion forums on thought-provoking questions in medicine, environment, technology, ethics, social media: sharing, engaging, and ideating with other participants and BioHC faculty;

  • Community building for sharing additional resources, suggested readings, and related links.

The focus is on delivering academic knowledge rather than know-how (which can be better achieved through training at home institutes) and providing a forum for critical thinking and exchange

IBD4Health is organised within the framework of the EIT-Health . It is co-organised by the Université Grenoble-Alpes and the Universitat de Barcelona in partnership with ESI and CASyM .

My participation was focused on mentoring and facilitating students and entepreneurs to explore new perspectives and join the widet EIT Alumni Community.
